Indonesia have appointed local coach Benny Dollo to take charge of the national team, replacing Bulgarian Ivan Kolev, the country's soccer federation said on its Web site.Dollo, who was coaching local side Persita Tangerang until recently and also previously had a spell with the national team in 2001, beat out Sriwijaya coach Rahmad Dermawan for the job. "Benny Dollo and Rahmad Dermawan are the two best coaches in Indonesia at this moment, both have similar achievements and have studied coaching abroad," said Iswadi Idris, a member of the national team committee.
"However, Benny Dollo has a special advantage in terms of experience and now his status is free from contract with any club," added Idris. Dollo, who will have a two-year contract starting Feb. 1, said he was looking to toughen-up the team. "One of the most important things is that the players who will be selected for the team need to have the physical qualities to be football players," said Dollo.
Under Kolev, Indonesia started last year's Asian Cup brightly by defeating Bahrain, but then failed to make it through the group stage of the tournament they were co-hosting. Indonesia have since had a number of poor results, including an embarrassing 11-1 aggregate defeat to Syria in the second round of qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.
