Indian golfer Shiv Chowrasia wins Indian masters

Indian golf is celebrating after their own Shiv Chowrasia won the Indian Masters with a stunning final round at the title the Delhi Golf Club. 29-year-old Chowrasia carded a superb Sunday round of 67 to leave his rivals reeling. Chowrasia has now earned a massive three-year exemption on the European Tour and will be afforded hero status in India that only the likes of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and golfer Jeev Milka Singh are granted. Singh, incidentally, is the only other golfer to have won on the European Tour - the 2006 Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

Chowrasia finished up on Sunday evening at 9-under - a total score of 279. That put him two shots in front of Ireland's Damien McGrane. Three brilliant birdies over the opening four holes gave the Indian swinger the momentum he needed to see the job through.

"It is the biggest achievement of my life and beyond my expectations," said Chowrasia. Chowrasia is the son of a green keeper at Royal Calcutta Golf Club. "It hasn't quite sunk in yet but playing the last few holes, I realized the title was within my grasp. Keeping my calm was important at that stage, so I kept my cool," he said.

Spain´s Jose Manuel Lara finished third with a final day 72. pre tournament favourite Ernie Els finished sixth.
